About Me

Alex Young is a visual artist who works primarily in hot glass, and flameworked glass. They use mixed media to create sculptural art which focuses on human emotion and interaction. This mode of working stemmed from a deep desire for Alex to be able to connect and share with the world and people around them. Alex was homeschooled for the majority of their childhood, in addition to having an undiagnosed developmental disorder. These circumstances made adjusting to life outside of their parent’s home extremely difficult at first. Through the making of art, Alex has found new ways to express themselves and connect with their peers and the world around them.

Alex first began working in glass while they were enrolled in a chemical engineering program in Arizona. The first six years of their glass experience involved teaching beginning glassmaking classes, and interactive programming with students. Their background in science and chemistry allows them to give detailed explanations of how the material functions to audiences who have never seen glassmaking before. During their time in Arizona, they were also heavily involved in art programming for developmentally disabled adults and elementary school children, allowing these individuals to express themselves through the use of mosaic and fused glass projects.

Alex relocated to the state of New York to finish their undergraduate degree at Alfred University, where they will be graduating in 2022. They have been able to continue sharing their passion for art, glass, and science by working for the Corning Museum of Glass as a member of their demonstration team since May 2021.
