The human experience is often wrought with complex emotional ties and connections. These bonds can be restricting or liberating depending on the context and stage of life they are experienced in. My work attempts to create a bridge between a conceptual sense of self and the physical nature of existence through the use of fantastical human-plant hybrids.
The figure's transparent bodies suggest invisibility that allows them to blend into their surroundings. They sit in unreserved positions: sometimes at peace in their scenic worlds, while at other times frozen in moments of internal turmoil. Clear glass chains bind some of these figures to one another, or to themselves, in a symbolic metaphor for the bonds we feel as humans to one another or to ourselves. These chains represent the delicate nature of human interaction; though bonds can feel extremely strong it is often easier to break them than we perceive. It is up to the viewer, much like it is up to the individual, to decide if these bonds are positive or negative.
These miniature tableaus and their protagonists contemplate human experience, truth, and our relationship to ourselves and each other. The fact that glass under stress will break lends itself to a comparison with humanity. Glass is a material in flux as it is being formed and transitions from pliable to solid. We, too, form in response to our experience.
